Comments:
This story retells and expands upon the origin of the Amazons and Wonder Woman. Several details are different from the earlier version including: Wonder Woman gets her magic lasso before leaving Paradise Island in this story, but she originally did not receive it until the first story of Sensation Comics #6; Steve Trevor receives a promotion to Major after returning from Paradise Island, but originally he did not receive it until the first story of Sensation Comics #6; and Wonder Woman’s birth from molded clay is revealed.
This story originally was not titled; the title shown here was given on the contents page of Wonder Woman Archives Vol. 1 in which this story is reprinted.
Synopsis:
To combat her rival god Ares, Aphrodite creates a race of Amazons and gives their leader Hippolyte a magic girdle to make them invincible. Ares sends Hercules to conquer the Amazons. Failing, Hercules uses trickery to steal the girdle and enslave the Amazons. Aphrodite frees them and retrieves the girdle. Then the Amazons settle on Paradise Island.
Sometime later Queen Hippolyte moulds a human child from clay. Aphrodite gives the clay girl life as Princess Diana. Diana grows into a powerful Amazon, but when Steve Trevor’s plane crashes on Paradise Island, she falls in love with him.
Diana wins a competition to determine, which Amazon will bring Trevor back to America. She leaves Paradise Island as Wonder Woman and remains there to aid the world.
