Part 2: "The Secret of the Legion Rookie"
Following this story, Brainiac 5, Cosmic Boy, Light Lass, and Saturn Girl, with new flight rings replacing their cumbersome flight belts, battle Vibrex, as revealed in the second story of Legion of Super-Heroes #267.
Synopsis:
When a costumed youth creates hypnotic hallucinations to capture robbers, the Legion arrives on the scene to congratulate the boy. He introduces himself as Command Kid of the planet Preztor, and accepts their offer of membership.
Command Kid quickly displays immodesty about his supposed virtues and an insolent attitude toward everyone else. At an awards ceremony, he rudely refuses to accept the gold arm band Commissioner Wilson of the Science Police offers him. Later, overhearing several Legionnaires discussing his conceit and bad temper, he creates an illusion to make it seem as though Superboy, Mon-El, and Ultra Boy are fighting. Star Boy comes to him minutes later, wishing his own power was as impressive, and Command Kid gives him a pill which puts him in suspended animation with the promise that he will have infinitely greater abilities upon waking.
Later, while Command Kid avoids a gold replica of the Legion Clubhouse and a piece of Gold Kryptonite, his fellow Legionnaires come to share Star Boy's feelings regarding their own powers. He offers to do for them what he is doing for Star Boy, and after sending Superboy, Mon-El, and Ultra Boy on a mission, gives the others pills which render them inanimate.
Just as he is about to seal their fates with a special device, Saturn Girl and Element Lad return from a mission, and the latter uses his power to turn the device into gold and render Command Kid unconscious. They then inform their revived comrades that an evil demon, who's only weakness was gold, had possessed Command Kid when his rocket-craft had crashed on a taboo isle on Preztor.
The evil demon departs Command Kid's body and flies into space, and the youth thereupon quits the Legion to return to his world.
