Comments:
John Stewart becomes a reserve Green Lantern following an injury to Hal's back-up Guy Gardner in this story.
Synopsis:
When an earthquake strikes, Guy Gardner tries to rescue a young girl. He is seriously injured when he is hit by a bus. With Guy out of action for several months, Hal Jordan consults the Guardians of the Universe to appoint a new back-up Green Lantern in his stead. The Guardians steer Hal to John Stewart, an out-of-work black architect who meets the qualifications. John accepts the job.
Hal then begins training John. Their exploits soon take them to an airport where racist senator Jeremiah Clutcher is arriving. When a runaway fuel truck threatens the senator, Hal protects him, while John stops the truck. Oil from the truck spills on the senator. John admits that he let it happen on purpose.
To teach John a lesson, Hal assigns his back-up to act as a bodyguard for the senator. When an assassin strikes at a stadium rally, John refuses to pursue. Instead, John stops another shooter in the parking lot. Hal questions John's motives, until the new GL points out that the would-be assassin fired blanks. It was a setup by the senator to discredit blacks for his upcoming presidential campaign.
