After teaching the boys in his class a lesson, John Tane returns to town just in time to witness his father being shot by escaping bank robbers. The doctor tells Johnny to leave, so that he can operate to save the sheriff's life. Johnny then dons the costume of Johnny Thunder and goes after the bank robbers.
Johnny finds the trail left by the crooks. He captures a couple of them that have been left behind to protect the trail from pursuit. When he questions them, he learns that the gang has circled back into town and abducted the wounded sheriff. Johnny then tracks down the gang and protects his father while capturing them. After the action is over, the sheriff is returned to his hospital bed to recover.
