Johnny Tane receives a letter from Amos Entland which tells of his son Jerry who won't go to school because he wants to be a cowboy like Johnny Thunder. Johnny, who is secretly Johnny Thunder, rides out to the Entland ranch and finds the family held at gunpoint by outlaws. He captures the crooks, then convinces Jerry to stay in school.
Johnny takes the gunmen to the local jail. Kit witnesses them talking to other members of the gang through the jail house window. He saddles Black Lightning to go after the crooks, but Kit is no match for them and is captured.
Black Lightning escapes and picks up Johnny. Together the horse and rider track the outlaws to their hideout on the Entland land. Johnny rescues Kit and captures the rest of the gang who was trying to scare off the ranchers to prevent the discovery of their hideout.
