Synopsis:
Having resigned his commission, Captain Atom returns to Washington, D.C. free of Wade Eiling's control. However he feels out of place in the city. Most of his associates are out of town with family for the holidays, including Randy and Margaret who are vacationing in Colorado with Eiling and his father. The elder Eiling tells Adam's children about a battle he fought against Enemy Ace in World War I. He tells them that only now does he understand Von Hammer's code of combat in which how you fight is more important than winning. This change of heart angers Wade and provokes an argument.
Meanwhile in D.C., Cameron Scott drowns his sorrows in a pub. Suddenly, a condemned hotel down the street erupts into flame. The building was firebombed by another man in the bar for the insurance money. Captain Atom acts to save many of the homeless squatters inside the building. Only one of them is killed, which leads the bomber to question his own actions. Captain Atom is the celebrated by the bar patrons. One of them, Eve Eden, introduces herself and leaves the bar with Atom.
