Comments:
"The Dark Cross Conspiracy" Chapter One
This story takes place in late 1938. A caption denotes the date December 7, 1938, but a cab driver remarks that it is late November.
Although this story makes several references to Secret Origins #5 in which the origin of the Crimson Avenger is told, this story features the Post-Crisis Crimson Avenger. The previous story is considered the Earth-2 version of the character which for the purposes of this index is considered an entirely independent character.
This story continues in Crimson Avenger #2.
Synopsis:
The Crimson Avenger saves the life of Hiram Goldstein a vocal opponent of Hitler's Germany. During the chase with the would-be killers, Wing is wounded. After the incident, Travis decides that he should give up his double-life of danger.
The following day Lee attends an auction where he sees a pretty girl in the crowd. The woman is ballerina Sonya Nabotov. In order to force a meeting he outbids her on a faberge egg that is being auctioned. He then offers to give her the egg in exchange for dinner. She agrees, and the dinner leads back to Lee's apartment for the evening.
Lee and Sonya are awakened by a phone call in the early morning. The call is from Goldstein who reports information of a late night meeting of American nazis who have acquired a powerful weapon. Lee ushers Sonya out, then dons his costume once more. He follows Goldstein's tip which leads to an empty building with murder victim outside. The police arrive to find the Crimson standing over the dead body.
