"The Dark Cross Conspiracy" Chapter Two

The text page in this issue reveals that the first name of Lee Travis's secretary Miss Stevens is Sally. However, her Earth-2 counterpart who appeared in the seventh story of Detective Comics #21 was named Ann Stevens.

This story is continued from Crimson Avenger #1 and continues in Crimson Avenger #3.

Synopsis:
The Crimson Avenger evades police after they find him standing over the body of a dead bundist. He manages to avoid capture by hiding is a secret basement inside a bar. In the basement, he finds a bundist meeting place, but no one is present.

After the pursuit has died down, Lee Travis visits the morgue where he learns that the murder victim's brain and eyes were burned out leaving only a smell that is reminiscent of licorice. He then visits his newspaper office and narrowly avoids a bomb that destroys the printing presses. Finally he returns to his apartment which has been ransacked. Wing informs him that he managed to hide his Crimson Avenger costume, and that he gave the faberge egg won at auction to Su Ling Fang, the aviatrix.

Suspecting the egg is of importance, Lee wants to locate Su Ling. She has left for San Francisco. Lee decides to follow, but air traffic east of Chicago has been grounded. He hops a train bound for Chicago only to find his paramour of the night before Sonya Nabotov already on board.

After dining with Sonya and Hollywood cowboy Slim Chance, Lee excuses himself. He dons his costume and checks the baggage car. He finds a coffin belonging to Chance and inside is a gun which he believes is the weapon used to kill the man in New York. An assassin then strikes. The Crimson avoids the shot and a fight ensues. The killer falls out the side door and off the train. A cloud of gas from the mysterious weapon leaves the Avenger unconscious. When he regains his senses, he finds that all the evidence has been thrown off the train, except for the weapon which was underneath him.
