"The Dark Cross Conspiracy" (Chapter Three)

This story is continued from Crimson Avenger #2 and continues in Crimson Avenger #4.

Synopsis:
The Crimson Avenger has traveled to San Francisco to retrieve a faberge egg in the possession to Su Ling Fang. Sonya Nabotov has also come to the city and is assaulted by henchmen working for Su Ling's uncle Wu Fang. The Crimson rescues Sonya and returns her to her hotel where she sleeps off the effects of his newly acquired gas gun.

When Sonya awakens, the Crimson reveals to her his secret identity. He questions her and learns that the Dark Cross are not Nazi sympathizers, but they are actually a group of weapons merchants who sell to the highest bidder. Sonya knows four of the five leaders of the group which include Su Ling's uncle. The fifth member is a masked man known as the Chairman.

The Crimson, Sonya, and Wing head for Treasure Island the site of the upcoming Western Worlds Fair. They encounter Su Ling who believes her uncle is supporting the Chinese cause. However, she and Lee's group overhear the members of the Dark Cross at a meeting where they intend to profit from their weapons dealings.

The Crimson breaks up the meeting. The Chairman escapes with the experimental brain However, Sonya retrieves the egg. The group then make their escape toward Su Ling's seaplane. Lee asks Sonya to turn over the egg, and she gives him a fake. He immediately knows that it is a phony and takes the real egg from her purse. She admits that the egg has secret Japanese codes hidden on it which she intended to sell. Lee leaves her behind, and Sonya is shot. The others board the plane which takes off, but the enemy forces of the Dark Cross snare it with a harpoon.
