"The Secret Origin of Maxwell Lord"
This story recaps Max's origin from Justice League International #12.
Synopsis:
Maxwell Lord and Oberon share a drink in Max's office. Oberon asks about Max's past. He explains that he started as a low-level executive. His ambition caused him to take up spelunking in order to lure his boss to his demise. Max didn't need to create an accident, because his boss had one on his own. In the cavern Max discovered a sentient computer created by Metron which helped Max rise to the head of the company.
Max, under the direction of the computer, manipulated events pivotal to the formation of the new Justice League. However, Max's association with the computer soon turned against him. The computer was destroyed in the process. Despite learning about Max's manipulations, J'onn and Oberon were partly responsible for allowing Max to remain associated with the League.
