Synopsis:
While passing a bookstore, Slam and Shorty witness crook Muscles Mallon reading a book. Slam sees messages written in the margins of the book. He tries to get answers from Mallon, but before the crook will talk, he is shot by gang boss Beefy Barber. Slam tries to catch the gang and is nearly killed.

After the fight, Slam is unable to find the book Mallon was reading. He suspects trouble at the bookstore when he sees burglar tools delivered. Shorty hides inside a suitcase left at the store, while Slam tracks down the crooks. He is captured and tied to a safe rigged with explosives.

When the bookstore closes, Shorty exits the briefcase and goes into the basement. He finds a hole in the wall leading to the diamond exchange next door. He enters and finds Slam. Shorty releases Slam from the ropes holding him to the safe. The two detectives then apprehend the gang.
