Comments:
While Hawkman (Katar Hol) and Hawkwoman (Shayera Thal) have appeared in the Post-Crisis universe before this point, this story introduces new incarnations of the characters. Had this story been set in the past, the Post-Crisis versions, who last appeared during the Invasion crossover, and the new versions could be reconciled. However, later stories indicate that the Hawkman from this series arrived on Earth in the present, which contradicts the previous incarnation of Hawkman, where he was already on Earth. Many attempts were later made to try and correct these inconsistencies including claims that the previous Hawkman and Hawkwoman existed, but were not Katar and Shayera. In order to differentiate between the first post-Crisis Hawkman who appeared from 1986-1989 and this version, the Hawkworld incarnation will be treated as an entirely separate character.
Synopsis:
Katar Hol, the son of Paran Katar, a noted statesman and scientist of Thanagar, has joined the Wingmen, the Thanagaran police force. His first mission involves, invading the downside of Thanagar, populated by the down-trodden mostly alien population from conquered worlds. He watches as Captain Kragger kills a man. He also uncovers a hidden cache of stolen weapons.
After the battle, Katar joins his father for dinner with Commissioner Andar Pul. During the dinner, Katar meets Shayera Thal, the daughter of administrator Thal Porvis. He also witnesses her xenophobic reaction to an alien waiter.
When Katar returns to duty, he and Kragger search the downside for clues to the stolen guns. They are ambushed by armed rebels, who have been hired by the Wingmen Commander Byth. Kragger is killed in the exchange.
Later, Katar and Shayera go hunting. Shayera fires on several creatures and kills them without a second thought. When Katar follows a wounded creature into a cave, he discovers the creature to be sentient and intelligent. Katar leaves the creature in peace, and silently disgusted with the situation on Thanagar.
