Comments:
Shayera Thal's history is revealed in this story. She was a child rescued by Katar Hol while he was a Wingmen Ensign. After a bomb killed the original Shayera Thal, she was adopted by Thal Porvis, Shayera's father, and given the name Shayera.
Synopsis:
Katar Hol has created an underground relief operation on the downside of Thanagar. Meanwhile, Byth has become Administrator of Protection, mostly based on his takedown of Paran Katar and a gun smuggling operation to the underground rebels. Paran's involvement was a setup, and Byth was the true smuggler.
A red-headed female member of the Wingmen finds Katar's operation. Katar shows her that his efforts are benevolent. After some convincing, the girl learns the truth about Katar and Byth. She explains to Katar that he rescued her years earlier and was later adopted by Thal Porvis who recently lost his own daughter. The new Shayera Thal then gives Katar wings and weapons to return to the upside.
Katar confronts Byth. A battle is fought with Katar prevailing. Shayera stops Katar from killing Byth, who flees. Evidence of Byth's crimes are uncovered, and Katar's place in the Wingmen is restored. He continues to provide aid to the downside, but he and Shayera, now partners are sent offworld to track down Byth.
