This story is continued from Captain Atom #41 and continues in Captain Atom #43.
Synopsis:
Following Captain Atom's attempt to enter the Quantum Field to reconnect with his dead wife, his route home is cut off, and he dies. In the afterlife he meets the Black Racer and Death who guide him to Purgatory where Destiny awaits. In Purgatory, Captain Atom must prevails against his own sins. He helps Rick Flag along the way. With some help from the Phantom Stranger, Atom reaches the mountaintop where his wife Angela awaits. However, the supernatural beings inform Captain Atom that Nekron has claimed his body in the real world. They advise him to return in order to stop Nekron who intends to use Atom's form for evil.
