Comments:
This story makes reference to an untold adventure of Robin, "The Case of the Headless Statues."

J'onn J'onzz is the chairman of the JLA meeting in this story.

The Justice League monitors Green Lantern's battle with the Protonic Force in the second story of Green Lantern #29 following this story.

Synopsis:
The Justice League answers letters from Bruce Wayn, Ray Palmer, and C. King, unaware that these are actually the members not attending the meeting: Batman, Atom, and Aquaman. Moreover, the supposed letter-writers claim they never sent the appeals. Curious, Batman secretly joins the investigation of Flash, Green Arrow, and Snapper into a series of art gallery robberies; Atom accompanies Wonder Woman and J'onn J'onzz to the site of a cannon that somehow fires itself; and Superman and Green Lantern are joined by Aquaman as they try to solve the secret of a disappearing island.

Suddenly, the entire membership is captured by powerful tentacles and drawn through a space warp, where they confront a nameless "ultra-galactic" being, which calls itself "I." Having discovered that the actions of the League as a team are somehow draining its life-force, it created the fake letters to lure them into traps so as to capture them and remove their "success factor," thus preventing them from operating as a team.

Now able to succeed in their endeavors only as individual heroes, the heroes are on the verge of disbanding, when Snapper suggests that they reactivate Amazo, the android which possesses their combined powers. The energy released by Amazo, as he batters the heroes into submission, serves to destroy "I," and the JLA's "success factor" is restored, whereupon they defeat the android, and return to solve the cases they had been investigating.
