Synopsis:
Mark Merlin is called to a mine in the Andes which has been plagued by loud terrifying noises. The miners believe the noises are made by the Monster of Orinca, a creature left to guard magic items hidden in the mountains. The creature is said to be controlled by an emerald.

Mark is given a guide named Lopar who is a mining foreman. The guide leads Mark and Elsa into the mountains where they encounter the creature. Mark deduces that Lopar is controlling it in order to locate the cache of magic items. Mark destroys the control emerald which vanquishes the monster. He then brings Lopar back to the mine and orders the area around the magic items sealed off.
