Comments:
This story is continued from Martian Manhunter #2 and continues in Martian Manhunter #4.

J'onn's true form is revealed for the first time in this story. New details concerning J'onn's origins are revealed.

Synopsis:
J'onn is shocked to find that Dr. Erdel, the man who brought him to Earth, is still alive. H'ronmeer threatens Erdel and brands him. The brand is familiar to J'onn, but he cannot remember where he has seen it before. The Martian Manhunter is prevented from helping Erdel by a wall of fire. He is also plagued by a conflicting set of memories emerging from deep within his own mind.

Faced with both the internal mental conflict and the physical danger to his friend Erdel, J'onn begins breaking down. He cries out in anguish, then blows out the fire before finally coming to Erdel's aid. His body has taken a different shape, one that J'onn quickly realizes is his true form.

H'ronmeer disappears, leaving J'onn and Erdel time to get reacquainted. The self-made scientist explains to the martian that when he brought J'onn to Earth, J'onn was carrying the lifeless body of his daughter. J'onn went mad and destroyed the machine that brought him to Earth. Erdel helped J'onn regain his mind by building up a fabricated story of J'onn's previous life. J'onn also changed his physical appearance to that of a beetle-browed martian. Even Erdel's death was a lie fabricated to make J'onn's life easier until he was ready to learn the truth.

J'onn's true memories begin to slowly return. Erdel explains that he has rebuilt the machine that brought J'onn to Earth. After visiting his daughter's grave, a daughter he barely remembers, J'onn returns to Mars where he is met by H'ronmeer.
