Synopsis:
Arak and his companions sail along the Black Sea on the way to White Cathay. A powerful storm befalls the group and sinks the ship. Arak, Valda, Satyricus, and Johannes are the only survivors. They wash up on the sandy shores of the coast. Johannes points to a gleaming spot on a mountainside that represents the location of their destination. When they get closer he warns them not to look directly at the light, lest they be blinded.
As they approach, a giant roc is spotted. Johannes advises the group not to disturb it or the nest. Valda looks up at the next and inadvertently at the gleaming city. She is blinded. Johannes explains that the only cure for Valda is a gem that can be found in the roc's nest.
Satyricus and Arak climb the cliffs to obtain the jewel. The satyr gets there first and retrieves the gem, but the roc grabs him. Arak jumps onto the roc and causes it to drop Satyricus. He then fights the bird while holding on for his life. Arak prevails and returns with Satyricus and the gem. Johannes uses the gem to restore Valda's eyesight.
