Synopsis:
Jennifer Morgan catches a boy, Valdesar, robbing a corpse in an alley in Shamballah. She takes pity on the boy and brings him into the palace against the advice of Masaq. When a shopkeeper accuses the boy of being a thief, Jennifer defends the boy. Later a dagger goes missing, and Masaq accuses Valdesar. Jennifer uses magic to learn the truth. To her horror she discovers that the boy killed the man in the alley.
Jennifer track down Valdesar who has just killed the shopkeeper. When he sees Jennifer, Valdesar runs. Jennifer gives chase. When he reaches the street the boy is run down by a horse driven wagon and trampled to death. Jennifer returns to the palace and cries herself to sleep.
