Professor Lawrence meets Tall Bird is Wyoming. She tells him a story of Jonah's youth in which he was abused by his alcoholic father. Later as a young man, Jonah was drinking and mistook an abusive man for his own father. Jonah shot the man who turned out to be Lucas McGill, a criminal. Jonah received a reward and went on to establish himself as an elite bounty hunter.

Mr. Lewellyn, a collector of authentic frontier memorabilia, wants the Hex statue also. He tries to take it from Tall Bird at gunpoint. Strangely, the gun held by Jonah's corpse fires and kills Lewellyn.
