Seeking freedom from the class-based society of England, Professor Theophilus Barrow makes the journey to the colonies. Upon his arrival, Barrow discovers that he lacks the skills necessary to become a frontiersman.

When indians attack the settlers' stockade, Barrow volunteers to run to the nearby fort for help. The indians nearly capture him, but he is saved by Tomahawk.

Tomahawk then leads a diversionary attack against the indians to save the stockade. Using his knowledge of science Barrow is able to lend his assistance and thwart the attack. Barrow's skills as a man of science are then seen as valuable, and he becomes a school teacher again.
