Synopsis:
The heroes who travelled to the Manhunter homeworld follow in pursuit of the Highmaster as he flees into space. When the Manhunter leader stops to fight them, the heroes find themselves overmatched. Doctor Fate attempts to cast a spell to help the heroes, but he is still unsure of himself. He is also unable to connect mystically with Nabu and his predecessor Kent Nelson because of his distance from Earth. As a result, Fate's spell puts the heroes in immediate danger. To save them from his own mistake, Fate transfers the life energies of the heroes into Superman and Green Lantern.

Back on Earth the Chosen assimilate the new knowledge imparted to them by the Guardian. Minister Kroef rejects the knowledge and turns against them. His bigotry causes John Stewart to strike at him. Kroef vows to destroy the Chosen. Meanwhile the Floronic Man secretly meets with a Manhunter agent, but because he has received some measure of enlightenment from the Guardian, Woodrue turns the Manhunter over to the heroes.

Meanwhile Batman has grown impatient with waiting at the Citadel. He takes Guy Gardner to confront Booster Gold. Booster, who has aligned himself with the Manhunters defeats Gardner, then flees. When Batman returns to the Citadel he threatens to kill the Manhunter prisoner. Before he can carry out the threat, Blue Beetle returns with his analysis of the Manhunter space ship. He has determined that more Manhunters are hiding inside the Earth.
