Comments:
This is an All-Star Squadron story, a special insert between pages 13 and 14 of the regular Justice League story intended as a preview of the new comic title, All-Star Squadron.
Since the All-Star Squadron has not yet been formed in this story, the individual founding members are listed as Guest Stars and Guest Appearances, rather than as Feature Characters.
Wonder Woman’s race against Green Lantern and the Flash in this story is based on the cover for Comic Cavalcade #1.
Superman, Batman, and Robin appear at the opening of a Gotham City USO club, as also depicted on the cover of World’s Finest Comics #6.
Although neither he nor his opponent the Alchemist know what the substance is, this is Superman’s first chronological encounter with Kryptonite.
The story, which takes place some hours before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, continues in All-Star Squadron #1.
Synopsis:
In this prelude to the first story of the All-Star Squadron (a World War II super-team on Earth-2, contemporaries of the Justice Society, and containing some of the same members, whose adventures are recounted for the first time beginning in All-Star Squadron #1), super-villains from later in the 1940s appear mysteriously to battle and abduct the heroes of the Justice Society the day before the attack on Pearl Harbor.
After a race for charity, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Green Lantern are battered by Solomon Grundy; Sandman, Starman, and Johnny Thunder team up unsuccessfully against the Sky Pirate; the demonic Wotan uses Dr. Fate’s powers to defeat both him and the Spectre; and the Alchemist overcomes Superman, Batman, and Robin at a U.S.O. opening. The Monster, however, is unable to vanquish the Atom, Hawkman, and Dr. Mid-Nite, leaving them free to form a new team to rescue their comrades.
