Comments:
This story is continued from Arion, Lord of Atlantis #34.
Arion is recruited by Harbinger in Crisis on Infinite Earths #1 following this story. However there are some inconsistencies in that Arion mentions the impending ice age in Crisis on Infinite Earths #1 which was thwarted in Arion, Lord of Atlantis #10. Therefore it is possible that his recruitment took place much earlier, between Arion, Lord of Atlantis #8 and Arion, Lord of Atlantis #9. However, when Arion returns to Atlantis in Crisis on Infinite Earths #2, the threat of the impending ice seems to have vanished giving more weight to its placement after this story and before the destruction of the City of the Golden Gate in Arion, Lord of Atlantis Special #1.
Synopsis:
After Arion is engulfed by a shadow bat created with black magic, the mage Rhajeem proclaims himself king of Atlantis. The rest of the conclave opposes him, but Rhajeem now possesses the power of black magic and is able to seal the other mages in their chambers.
Arion then frees himself and returns. He engages Rhajeem in magical combat. The black mage opens a portal to another realm and forces Arion inside. Believing his foe defeated, Rhajeem makes a proclamation of his new rule to the city. However, Arion is able to reopen the portal from the other side. A creature from that realm follows and kills Rhajeem before Arion exiles the beast back to its own realm.
With the threat ended, the conclave selects D'Tilluh's son M'Zalle as the next king.
