Comments:
Uncle Sam forms the Freedom Fighters in flashback in this story. The original roster includes Sam, Magno, Neon the Unknown, Miss America, Invisible Hood, Red Torpedo, and Hourman. Most of the original group is killed by the Nazis of Earth-X, leading Sam to recruit a new team.
This story, which takes place on February 23, 1942, is continued from All-Star Squadron #31 and continues in All-Star Squadron #33.
Synopsis:
After having his story interrupted by the arrival of Midnight, Uncle Sam explains how he found a parallel world that he calls Earth-X. He recruited a team of super-heroes from Earth-2 including former JSA member Hourman and stopped the attack on Pearl Harbor. However, his team was killed following the battle, leaving him stranded for months watching as America stayed out of the war.
When Midnight recovers from his injuries, he explains that he and Doll Man followed Sam into the vortex to Earth-X, but they arrived in occupied Paris. They battled the Nazis for months, eventually finding Baron Blitzkrieg and learning about another planned attack on America. They escaped that world through another vortex and made their way to the Perisphere.
Doll Man tells the group about the planned attack on Earth-X’s Santa Barbara, but the attack seems to be happening on both Earths. The Spectre takes Sam and a new group of Freedom Fighters back to Earth-X, while the Squadron flies to Santa Barbara to protect their own Earth from attack.
