Synopsis:
A Dominator researcher detonates a gene bomb in the sky above the Earth irradiating the planet. The results are felt by many of Earth's super-heroes. Their powers go out of control which endangers the lives of those around them. Max Lord organizes the unaffected heroes to help contain their fellow super-humans. Green Lantern and Guy Gardner subdue Captain Atom. Blue Beetle and Booster Gold reel in Animal Man. Hawkman, Kilowog, and Mister Miracle contain the New Guardians in South America. The Rocket Reds are tasked with stopping Firestorm and Soyuz in Moscow. While the Martian Manhunter helps Robotman corral the other Doom Patrol members in Kansas City. Eventually the affected heroes collapse.
The heroes and some affected villains are taken to a facility set up by Lex Luthor. A team of scientists led by Heinrich Megala and Will Magnus link the cause of the outbreak to a genetic variant possessed by those affected. While the heroes deteriorate, the remaining heroes are forced to combat attacks by super-villains who are taking advantage of the situation.
A small group of heroes is assembled by Max Lord and Amanda Waller for a special mission to the Dominion homeworld. This group includes: Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, Guy Gardner, Starman, Robotman, and Rocket Red. While briefing the heroes, Max collapses. The heroes then leave Earth where they encounter Superman in space. They also witness the arrival of a small ship containing the Omega Men and the Blasters. The heroes join this group on their mission to Dominion space.
The group reaches the Dominion world where Martian Manhunter in the disguise of a Dominator locates the researcher. He has been imprisoned by his own people for his actions. The Dominators are upset because they wanted to use Earth's meta-humans to serve them. J'onn is able to pull the information for an antidote to the gene bomb radiation from the researchers mind. The heroes then head for the prison where the Omega Men were held. It contains the equipment necessary to produce the antidote.
Back on Earth, the situation continues to worsen for the afflicted heroes. Scott Fischer dies. However, the gene bomb appears to have been responsible for resurrecting Metamorpho.
The heroes in space reach the Starlag. Martian Manhunter and Doc of the Omega Men work on creating the antidote while the other heroes fight off pursuit. They finish just before the arrival of a Khund warship. However, instead of going after the heroes, the Khunds attack the Starlag. They are now at war with the Dominion.
The ship containing the heroes then returns to Earth. The Omega Men depart. Superman remains in space to detonate the antidote bomb. He does not intend to return to Earth. The antidote is successful in curing the heroes.
